ARE YOU AGAINST BANNING OF IMPORTATION OF "TOKUNBO CARS" THROUGH LAND BOARDERS?........ I HAVE QUESTIONS FOR YOU.

1. Are you aware that Cotonou, Republic of Benin, Togo and Niger Republic relies solely on the car importation as their major source of revenue?Almost 80% of vehicles sold their are meant for Nigerian markets.

2. Are you aware that car business alone provides employment opportunities to millions of citizens their?..... Drivers, Bureau De Change operators, spare parts dealers, restaurants, hotels, fuel vendors, mechanics, clearing agents, security, okada, etc, etc,.

3. Are you aware that legitimate importers/traders paid double duty on their vehicles, one in Cotonou and one in Nigeria? That's why price of the cars always goes up. With the new system in place, you will pay only once.

4. Are you aware that even after paying for your choice car to the dealer, you can't take it out of the park without paying for the appropriate rate of duty and other charges? If it's passing through any African country you must equally pay again before finally reaching Nigeria?

5. Guess what? Due to the nature of our porous borders, people prepare to smuggle the vehicles through illegal routes denying the Government desired revenue even though the car will be use on Nigeria's road paid by other tax payers money.

6. Sounds funny right? Please be honest and ask yourself whether the car you are using paid appropriate rate of duty with up-to-date particulars. Not only you, please ask your spouse, friend, colleague, neighbour, boss, students, etc,. It's a shame.

7. Are you aware that due to our bi-lateral agreements former CGC Dikko Inde and current CGC Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd.) lobbied for those countries to be collecting duties on on behalf of Nigeria but they frustrated the efforts severally?

8. Are you aware that with the current exchange rate it's easier and cheaper to clear your car in Lagos than in Cotonou or Togo?

9. Are you aware that once you cleared your car from the Sea port your car details are being uploaded instantly on Customs data base and linked with other relevant agencies like FRSC, the Police, etc. You can challenge anybody that stops you on the road and refuse to give a dime?

10. Have you ever imagined how these cars you are seeing arrived Nigeria from Cotonou or Togo? Averagely, they usually spent three to four days all things being equal without serious problem. The cars are exposed to all kind of worst terrain from pot holes, ditches, swampy areas, untarred roads, etc, before finally arriving Nigeria.

11. Are you aware that if you cleared your car from Lagos Port in the morning you can safely drive your car and conveniently arrive Abuja latest in the night on the same day?

12. Are you not happy that instead of paying money to Cotonou or Togo on the cars whose final destination is here? We will now be paying to our OWN COUNTRY, NIGERIA.

13. Are you one of those myopic minds that says this is "Anti-North" policy? OK... Continue.. Is Cotonou part of Kano or Daura? Who told you Lome is Yobe or Niamey is Sokoto? Better wake up and may God deliver you from the sickness that's affecting your sense of reasoning. I prefer to conduct my business in Lagos than those places. Yes.... To contribute in the growth of Lagos is better than to contribute in the development of Cotonou.

14. Are you aware that the influx of these cars to Lagos port will also bring many businesses like mechanics, car wash, spare parts dealers, hotel and restaurant owners, etc. This is apart from unprecedented revenue to be generated.

15. Are you still saying this is "Anti-North" policy ko? Please mobilise Northern people and educate them that they don't have to clear their consignment in Lagos. All they have to do is to indicate from point of shipping..... Destination so so on Transit via Apapa or TCIP and the container will be escorted via Truck or Train. Your clearing Agent is responsible for that. We have bonded terminals (just like Lagos) ICNL in Kano and Kaduna and also APMT in Naibawa Kano. ICNL alone used to contribute over 60% of monthly revenue target of #600M. Another one is about to commence operations soon in Abuja.
Also, educate and call on Northerners to participate in establishments of Bonded Terminals.

ADVICE........

Let's objectively and sincerely look into the policy with the positive effect it may have on our economy. Also, the Government must enlighten Nigerians on the said policy and come up with comprehensive action plan to make the activity seamless and productive. This is to ensure the facilitation of legitimate trade and generation of maximum revenue to the Federal Government.
